Cannabis Lighting Cycles
This is easy. There's two growth cycles with cannabis plants.
The first is vegative growth, where the plant needs 18 - 24 hours of light a day. So 18/6, 18 hours of light, 6 hours of darkness.
I find a blue spectrum Envirolite works great for this stage. Depending on how much you want to yield you should vary the length of time your plants spend in this stage. For me, a couple of months is fine.
Then we switch it either a red spectrum Envirolite or a HSP light, HPS is much better and will produce bigger buds.
Cannabis plants need 12 hours of light during this stage, so 12/12.
The length of time you keep the plants in this cycle will depend on your strain. Most strains will finish in about 8 weeks but do a little bit of homework.
Remember when you switch to the flowering cycle your plants will double if not tripple in size. So keep that in mind during veg.

Good post...I like to veg under CFL's but have also had good luck with Modified spectrum HPS bulbs like son agro.. Many people feel that Metal Halide is the best light to veg under, and you can buy conversion bulbs for your HPS ballast.
One thing that NEEDS to be said also is that Halogen lights and Mercury vapor bulbs are the wrong spectrum for plant growth... Tanning bulbs don't work either
